Important Parts of Hospice Nutrition

One of the most essential parts of treating those who are dying at a hospice involves being able to give the patients the essential nutrition that is needed to help make the person feel more comfortable when dying. Health care for the dying is essential in that it can be something that is either desired or not desired from the person who is dying. Hospice nutrition works in that it helps to keep the body of the patient hydrated and well handled. There are some important risks involving this though.

Artificial nutrition and hydration are used for hospice nutrition. This is done when the person who is dying is no longer able to take the foods and liquids that are needed by mouth. This is especially the case for those who are unable to sustain life without some of the nutrients that they need and can die painfully if those nutrients are not present.

The way that this form of nutrition for health care for the dying involves the use of intravenous administration, or IV administration, into the body. A tube is put into the stomach of the patient so that the proper nutrition can be received. The tube is inserted by a professional doctor with the proper experience and training in end of life care. Also, the doctor will have to be able to control the amounts that are given to the person.

While this can help the body and reduce pain in various cases there are some essential risks to consider involving this form of health care for the dying. The reason why the body is suffering is generally from the disease that the person is dying. The pain symptoms may not be handled through artificial nutrition in all cases.

In fact, in some cases more painful symptoms can result from artificial nutrition. Some people may not have the interest in taking in the nutrition. Also, in some cases swelling, bloating and even diarrhea can occur as a result of this nutrition.

This is not required among all people who are dying though. This form of nutritional treatment can be refused by the dying person. The patient has the right to refuse this form of treatment. This is going to need to be done by the patient's direct request though, as the patient can tell the doctor what is desired of dying when that person is capable of making decisions. If there is ever any uncertainty about what the person desires then the treatment will end up continuing as originally planned.

Hospice nutrition is an important part of dying in that it can help to alleviate pain in various conditions. It is also important in that it can make matters worse in some situations. However, it is best to talk with the patient who is dying for details on what that patient desired for hospice nutrition.
